Surrey Old Boys Hockey Club

This weekend saw the varsity play host to the SOB Race Night. The night kicked off in noisey fashion as the first 8 horses battled it out over the turf at Ascot. Immediately the natural competitive streak between the club members came to the for and side betting took hold. Right from the off big fines, oops i mean winnings, were paid out as Malibu's horse failed to jump the hurdle and sent the rider (and Mailbu) sprawling on the floor!

The night progressed in a rollercoaster of wins and losses for all taking part. Well nearly all....Tug managed to go on a losing rampage and found himself chipless by the halway point!!! A variety of betting tactics were seen throughout the night with the most novel coming from Wet. With a £1 to win bet on all 8 horses he unsurprisingly made a loss! Mark showed to be deft in his horse selection with 4 straight wins leading up to the 8th and final race. Last minute frantic betting to try and catch the leaders saw people risking all for the chance to go top.

In the end Mark held on and finished the night £10 ahead of Recess. Unfortunately for mark his luck ended there as he chose the prize envelope containing the bottle of foul tasting liquor! The runners up then had the chance to win the remaining prizes. Recess was happy with the champagne and Dom was delighted with the punnet of grapes! The remaining big prizes were not picked until last with the Conan and Babs taking home not only £15 bar vouchers but also a free xmas dinner ticket. Not bad for finishing the night with only £1 and £2 respectively.

Although the event was not successfull in raising funds for the club with the event breaking even, a good time was had by all. But most importantly eveyone now knows that a furlong is 1/8 of a mile and has nothing to do with the length of a horse!!!!
